From Veldt Camp Fires

At the turn of the twentieth century, South Africa's interior was still traversed by transport riders, rugged men who moved goods across the veldt in ox-wagons, living by their wits and their knowledge of a land that tolerated no weakness. H.A. Bryden captured their stories before they vanished forever. This collection gathers the tales told around campfires: encounters with lions and snakes, negotiations with Khoikhoi and other travelers, the hard bargains and harder truths of frontier life. The book opens with a farmer's table where two transport riders spin their yarns, and the conversation turns to the little-known Orange River and a man named Mowbray who heard rumors of diamonds in a hidden valley. What follows is Mowbray's extraordinary quest, his brushes with death, his persistence in the face of a landscape that seemed determined to keep its secrets. These are not romantic adventure tales but something rarer: fragments of oral history preserved before the speaking voices fell silent. For readers drawn to frontier narratives, to the closing of the old world, or to South Africa's complicated past, Bryden's collection offers an unparalleled glimpse into a vanished way of life.
