Four Girls and a Compact

Four working girls, one sweltering city, and a Grand Plan that might just save their summer. In a cramped flat they call the B-Hive, Loraine, Laura Ann, T.O., and Billy dream of escape from the heat and monotony of urban life. When the smallest among them, the self-described "Talentless One" T.O., volunteers to find their perfect retreat, she embarks on a journey to Placid Pond that will change everything. Donnell's 1908 novel captures something timeless: the fierce loyalty of women who lean on each other through exhaustion and laughter, who scheme together and wait for one another, who feel that life has cheated them just slightly (like Laura Ann, who sighs that she "just missed" having a queeny name like Loraine). The prose fizzes with wit and warmth, revealing four distinct voices navigating work, friendship, and the radical act of choosing joy. This is a story about leaving, about finding space to breathe, and about the unremarkable girls who make extraordinary friends.
