For the Temple: A Tale of the Fall of Jerusalem
1888
The year is AD 66. The Roman legions are massing beyond the hills. The Temple of Solomon still stands in Jerusalem, but its days are numbered. John of Gamala, a young Jewish patriot, finds himself caught in the maelstrom of revolt, betrayal, and the slow-motion catastrophe about to unfold upon the Holy City. Henty's rousing adventure follows John through the scheming factions of pre-war Galilee, the brutality of occupying forces, and the desperate courage of a people determined to reclaim their freedom. As political infighting tears Judea apart from within, and Rome tightens its grip, John must choose between survival and loyalty to a cause many know is already lost. The novel builds toward the siege of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple in AD 70, one of history's most devastating cataclysms. For readers who crave historical adventure with real stakes, this is Henty at his best: visceral, researched, and deeply felt. It is a story about what it costs to resist the irresistible, and how a boy becomes a man when his world is burning.
