Flower of the Dusk

In the dying light of a spring sunset, Ambrose North stands on a cliff face, sightless eyes turned toward a horizon he can no longer see. Twenty years of darkness have not dimmed his capacity for beauty; he listens for music in the wind and feels the warmth of remembered sunsets on his silvered hair. His daughter Barbara, whose own body bears its own burdens, waits at home with their aunt Miriam, maintaining the fragile fiction of a normal life despite mounting poverty. Theirs is a household where love is expressed not in words but in small devotions, where grief for the lost mother Constance hangs in the air like the scent of pine after rain. Myrtle Reed crafts a world of aching tenderness, where two people bound by blood and necessity create meaning from what remains. The prose itself becomes almost musical, full of long elegiac sentences that mirror Ambrose's own relationship with the art he can no longer see performed. This is a novel about the invisible labours of care, the way tenderness persists even when hope grows thin, and the strange peace that can be found in simply being witnessed by someone who loves you.
