Falcon, of Squawtooth: A Western Story

The Falcon steps off a freight train into a dusty California mountain town with nothing but the clothes on his back and a past he won't name. He's one of thousands drifting west in the early 1900s, chasing the promise of railroad construction jobs and running from something he never quite explains. What he finds instead is a world of boxcar philosophers, fellow travelers with their own broken dreams, and a rough fraternity of men who survive on cunning and mutual protection. His encounter with the young, earnest Halfaman sparks an unlikely friendship that becomes the emotional anchor of the story two men bound by circumstance learning to trust in a world designed to chew them up. Hankins captures the raw poetry of hobo life: the hierarchies of the road, the coded language of the rails, the hard-won dignity of men who refuse to be invisible. This isn't your typical gun-slinging western it's quieter, stranger, and ultimately more honest about what it meant to be young and rootless in an America that was still figuring itself out.
