Duar the Accursed

Before Conan. Before Kull. There was Duar. Published in 1937, this is among the very first sword-and-sorcery stories ever written, a primal ancestor of the genre that would define fantasy literature. The scarred warrior Duar lies in chains, condemned to the Pits of Ygoth until a sorceress named Shar emerges from darkness, claiming to know his forgotten past. She sends him toward the Black Tower and the Rose of Gaon, a jewel that feeds a demon older than humanity. What follows is a descent into shadow: skeletal hordes, invisible killers, and a choice between cosmic dominion and mortal love. Ball writes with the raw energy of a genre being invented in real time. The prose snaps. The action hits hard. This is fantasy before it became polished, when it still bled. For readers who want to understand where the genre came from, or who simply want a bracing adventure that doesn't apologize, Duar delivers.
