A young Shawanoe warrior named Deerfoot and his two white friends, George and Victor Shelton, set out from the Ohio River and don't stop until they reach the Pacific Ocean. What follows is a wilderness adventure through untrammeled mountains, across rushing rivers, and into the heart of a frontier that's about to vanish forever. Deerfoot rides his beloved horse Whirlwind, and the bond between boy and animal matters as much as any human friendship. The novel's opening finds the three travelers staring at the ocean and grappling with what that endless horizon means for Deerfoot's people, for the settlers pushing west, for everyone caught in the collision of worlds. On the return journey upriver, hardship tests their courage and loyalty in ways that transform them. This is adventure fiction with genuine emotional weight: it lets readers see America through Indigenous eyes at a moment when everything is about to change.
