Cyrano de Bergerac (Hooker translation)
Cyrano de Bergerac, written by Edmond Rostand in 1897, is a play that tells the story of a talented 17th-century French swordsman and poet who struggles with his self-image due to his large nose. Believing that his appearance makes him unlovable, Cyrano helps a handsome but inarticulate soldier woo the woman he loves, Roxane. Brian Hooker's English translation is notable for its adaptation of Rostand's rhyming couplets into blank verse and served as the basis for the Academy Award-winning 1950 film featuring José Ferrer.
