Country Mouse
What starts as a familiar tale of innocent country girl versus jaded high society takes a deliciously sharp turn in Arthur Law's forgotten comedy of manners. The setup is comfortingly predictable: a young woman from the provinces arrives in London, all wide eyes and delicate manners, to navigate the treacherous waters of aristocratic society. But this mouse has teeth. Violet Aynsley is no wide-eyed ingénue. Behind her demure facade lies a calculating mind and an appetite for social advancement that would shock her hosts. As she moves through the drawing rooms of the Duke of St. Kitts and his circle, every flutter of her eyelashes calculates its effect. The men see a lamb; the women see a wolf. The comedy crackles as the aristocratic establishment discovers too late that they've welcomed a predator into their midst.
