Condemned as a Nihilist: A Story of Escape from Siberia
1892
In 1892, G.A. Henty turned his gaze toward one of the most fearsome regimes in Europe and asked: what happens when an innocent young Englishman stumbles into a revolutionary conspiracy? Godfrey Bullen arrives in St. Petersburg eager to begin his career in his father's business, but curiosity leads him to a masked ball where he unknowingly witnesses secrets that will destroy him. The secret police arrest him as a Nihilist. He is sentenced to the frozen hell of Siberia, thousands of miles from home, consigned to rot in a convict prison alongside true believers and common criminals alike. But Henty, ever the optimist of empire, gives his hero something the real prisoners of the Tsar rarely possessed: nerve, resourcefulness, and a chance at escape. Based on the actual accounts of Dr. Lansdell, who traversed Siberia and interviewed its prisoners, this novel pulses with the grim authenticity of a penal system designed to break men. It is a ripping adventure, yes, but also a window into an era when a word misheard could land you in a frozen tomb.
