Chain of Command

The premise is delicious: a telepathic mouse living in an atomic research facility must petition the humans to remove a trap from outside his family's home. What begins as a simple domestic worry becomes an escalating battle through layers of bureaucratic absurdity. George, who can speak and think as humans do, approaches the janitor first. Then the supervisor. Then security. Each level of authority deflects responsibility upward, insisting they must follow orders. The trap stays. The system is immovable. But George's persistence reveals something the humans never expected: the mice have been watching, learning, and they're far more organized than anyone realized. Arr's 1950s science fiction is really a sharp allegory about ordinary people navigating systems designed to ignore them. It works as a mouse fable about speaking truth to power, a satire of bureaucratic cowardice, and a quietly unsettling story about what happens when the underclass stops being invisible. It endures because the battle George fights never really ended.
