Centaur

Centaur is a strange, unsettling novel about what happens when a man begins to dissolve. O'Malley, a seemingly ordinary individual, experiences a gradual transformation that blurs the line between self and something far larger. Dr. Stahl, a mysterious figure, seems to understand what's happening - or perhaps he's part of it. The narrator watches with growing unease as O'Malley becomes something no longer entirely human, yet not something else either. Blackwood was writing about consciousness and identity decades before such ideas entered the mainstream, and he understood that the most terrifying thing is not a monster, but the loss of the boundaries that make you who you are. This is philosophical horror at its most refined: quiet, cumulative, and deeply unsettling.
