Captured by Apes; Or, How Philip Garland Became King of Apeland

What happens when the animals you raise grow up to rule without you? That's the unsettling question at the heart of this 1892 adventure, one of the first novels to imagine a human lost among intelligent apes. Philip Garland inherits his father's animal trading business and devotes himself to a small family of chimpanzees and baboons. He trains them with patience. He loves them. Then one night, disaster strikes, and Philip finds himself sailing toward the Malay Archipelago with nothing but desperation. Shipwrecked on a mysterious island, he encounters a society of intelligent, humanoid apes. Their leader is terrifyingly familiar: Goliah, the fierce baboon Philip raised from infancy. Now Philip must navigate ape politics, earn the trust of creatures who remember him as their former master, and ultimately claim a throne he never sought in a land where humans are the true outsiders. It predates Tarzan by two decades and offers a wild, weird meditation on what separates us from the beasts.
