Captives of the Flame

Captives of the Flame, published in 1963 by Samuel R. Delany, is the first novel in the Fall of the Towers trilogy. Set in a dystopian future on the brink of war, it follows Jon Koshar, a young man escaping from a penal camp as he navigates his identity and the societal decay around him. The narrative intertwines the lives of various characters, including a forest guard and an ambitious merchant, reflecting broader themes of power and personal struggle against a backdrop of impending conflict. The novel was later rewritten and published as Out of the Dead City in 1968.
