Calavar; Or, The Knight of the Conquest, a Romance of Mexico

In 1520, a Spanish fleet bearing Hernán Cortés approaches the coast of Mexico. Among the soldiers is Don Amador de Leste, a young knight of lofty ideals who dreams of glory, adventure, and converting the heathen masses to the true faith. He is everything the conquistadors claim to be but rarely are. But the conquest of Mexico will shatter his certainties and test whether honor can survive contact with empire. Robert Montgomery Bird's 1834 novel is an American author's attempt to grapple with the violent birth of the New World, blending breathless adventure with a critical eye toward the conquest's moral wreckage. Through Amador's eyes, we witness the encounter between worlds, the clash of civilizations, and the question that haunted the age: what does it mean to civilize through fire and steel? Part chivalric romance, part historical reckoning, Calavar is a fascinating artifact of early American literature's attempt to understand its own bloody origins.
