Bunyip Land
When Joe Carstairs was just a boy, his father vanished into the unmapped wilds of New Guinea, chasing butterflies and beetles while the world assumed he was dead. Now seventeen, Joe cannot accept that silence as an ending. He convinces a local doctor and one of his father's aboriginal workers to join him, and together with a stowaway named Jimmy and his dog Gyp, they set sail for the unknown. What follows is a relentless journey into the heart of darkness itself: crocodile-infested rivers, hostile terrain, and a sixth sense that seems to pull them inexorably toward something terrible. They find Joe's father imprisoned in a remote outpost, held by men whose minds have cracked under the strain of captivity, one of them an Englishman whose reason has completely fled. The rescue will test every ounce of courage these boys possess, and the journey home through dangers they barely survived the first time offers no guarantee of safety. This is adventure fiction at its most elemental: a son's love driving him into the abyss, and the wilderness refusing to give them back without a fight.
