Buffalo Roost: A Story of a Young Men's Christian Association Boys' Department

The book opens on chaos: a train derailing in a thunderstorm, passengers in danger, and a young boy named Willis Thornton wading into peril to rescue a baby. This is no ordinary child. His father, a miner, is dead, and Willis carries both grief and a fierce need to prove himself, to matter. The YMCA becomes his anchor, a place where fatherless boys find structure, purpose, and brotherhood. As Willis navigates his youth at Buffalo Roost, he confronts what it means to grow up without a father's guidance while longing to honor his memory. The wilderness and adventure call to him, but so does the quieter work of becoming a person of character. This is early twentieth-century boys' fiction at its core: earnest, adventurous, and deeply concerned with character formation. For readers who enjoy historical coming-of-age stories, YMCA fiction, or narratives about young people finding purpose through challenge and community.
