Bosambo of the River

Bosambo begins his story in chains, sentenced to a remote penal settlement in colonial Africa. But intelligence and ambition prove more powerful than any sentence. After killing his oppressor and escaping into the wilderness, he transforms himself from fugitive to force to be reckoned with. Through cunning and sheer force of will, Bosambo rises to become chief of the Ochori tribe, commanding respect from both his people and the British colonial officials who must reckon with this unexpected ruler. The novel crackles with tribal intrigue. Arachi, a scheming borrower with chiefdom dreams, plots and manipulates, while the shadow of Commissioner Sanders, a colonial administrator who plays local powers against each other, looms over every political move. Written in 1914, this is adventure fiction that refuses to simplify its world. Bosambo is no noble savage and no simple villain. He is a man who seized his destiny with both hands.
