Blair of Balaclava: A Hero of the Light Brigade

The year is 1854. Jack Blair spends his days copying legal documents in a grim solicitor's office, bullied by his supervisor, dreaming of something more. When he defends a fellow clerk against cruelty and loses his job, he heads for London with little but defiance in his heart. On a dangerous road, he encounters Sergeant Bob Barrymore, a rough, generous soldier who helps him out of trouble and steers him toward the Lancers, that famed regiment known as the Death or Glory Boys. What follows is Jack's transformation from timid clerk to cavalryman, set against the thunder of the Crimean War and the legendary charge at Balaclava. Escott Lynn writes with breathless momentum, capturing the camaraderie, hardship, and fierce pride of soldiers who ride into history.
