Birds and All Nature, Vol. 7, No. 4, April 1900

April 1900 arrives with birdsong and urgent pleas for forests. This volume of the beloved nature periodical opens in full spring glory: poems celebrating robins and awakening meadows sit alongside detailed observations of the American Bittern's mysterious courtship, and tender accounts of a mockingbird family befriended by human caretakers. But beneath the Victorian reverence for nature runs a progressive current of environmental anxiety. Writers mourn disappearing woodlands and argue, with surprising conviction, that humans bear responsibility for preserving the wild creatures share with us. The prose balances scientific curiosity with poetic wonder - a time when watching birds meant something, when noticing the firstreturning warbler could inspire genuine awe. For readers curious about how our great-grandparents understood the natural world, this volume offers a window into an age when nature writing could be both scientific inquiry and spiritual practice, when protecting birds meant protecting something sacred.
