Bird-Lore, March-April 1916

This 1916 issue of Bird-Lore offers a remarkable window into the early American conservation movement and a vanished era of birdwatching. As the official publication of the Audubon Societies, it captures a moment when ornithologists and amateur enthusiasts were first mobilizing to protect vanishing species and document seasonal rhythms now disrupted by a century of change. The issue includes Gilbert H. Grosvenor's charming account of transforming his family farm into a thriving avian sanctuary, complete with the careful removal of invasive English Sparrows and the strategic placement of nesting boxes. Readers will find field observations of migration patterns, notes on nesting behaviors, and practical guidance for bird clubs, a snapshot of how Americans first learned to truly look at the birds around them. For modern birders, it provides both historical context and a strange comfort: the same questions about wrens and bluebirds, the same joys of watching a chickadee investigate a new home.
