Beacon Lights of History, Volume 12: American Leaders

These are the lectures of a 19th-century historian, delivered from the rostrum to generations of students, now preserved in print like a voice from the past. John Lord believed history was made by exceptional men, and in this volume he turns his Victorian gaze upon the figures who shaped American destiny: Andrew Jackson, the frontier roughneck who became a people's president; Henry Clay, the great compromiser who nearly held the union together; Daniel Webster, the thundering orator who fought for the national compact; John C. Calhoun, the brilliant mind that gave slavery its most sophisticated defense; Abraham Lincoln, the reluctant savior of the union; and Robert E. Lee, the Southern gentleman whose defeat became legend. Written in 1902 but drawing on decades of teaching, this book captures how an earlier America understood its own past. The prose carries the cadences of the lecture hall, the moral certainty of Victorian historiography, and the conviction that these men were "beacon lights" whose lives illumined the path of national greatness. For readers who want to understand not just what happened, but how Americans once narrated their own history to themselves.
