Bar-20 Days

The year is 1911, and the American West is about to meet its most enduring cowboy. Before Hopalong Cassidy became a film and television icon, he was something wilder: a rough-riding drifter with a fast gun and a faster temper, riding into town with nothing but his horse, his partner, and an appetite for trouble. In this novel that started it all, Hopalong and his steady companion Johnny Nelson ride into a bustling coastal town with their guns left behind, a deliberate choice that immediately puts them at a disadvantage. What follows is a cascade of misadventures: peculiar purchases from a hardware store spiral into saloon chaos, locals issue sharp warnings about careless strangers with money, and the duo must navigate a world where their reputation precedes them but their weapons do not. The comedy emerges from their attempts to blend in while chaos finds them anyway... a charming portrait of two men who cannot escape their nature, even when they try. This is early Western fiction at its most vital: pulp energy, genuine humor, and the first glimpse of a legend. For readers who want the original Hopalong, before Hollywood softened him, here he is, raw and fully alive.
