At the Point of the Bayonet: A Tale of the Mahratta War
1901
When Major Lindsay's camp is slaughtered by Mahratta forces, only an infant survives: young Harry, whisked away by his nurse Soyera in a desperate act of courage. She colors his skin, disguises him as her own child, and carries him into a world that will raise him as the enemy. Raised among the Mahrattas, Harry grows up caught between two peoples, two loyalties, and two names. The boy who should have died with his parents now must navigate a treacherous landscape where discovery means death, where the British bayonets advance ever closer, and where the question of who he truly is may have no answer. G.A. Henty crafts a propulsive tale of identity torn between blood and belonging. The historical backdrop is vivid: the fractured Mahratta Confederacy, the British campaigns sweeping across India, the clash of empires rendered through the eyes of a child who cannot tell friend from foe. Yet beneath the adventure lies something quieter and more unsettling the portrait of a boy building a life on a foundation of lies, always watching, always waiting for the moment his secret destroys him. The novel asks what remains of home when home becomes the enemy.
