Aquis Submersus

A man returns to his childhood village and finds the castle garden where he once played now fallen into ruin. There, among the decaying arbors and neglected walks, memories rise unbidden of his friendship with the pastor's son, and of the haunting portrait that hung in the village church: the image of a drowned child, its dark eyes watching all who entered. As the narrator pieces together the tragic history hidden within these walls, Storm weaves a tale of forbidden love destroyed by class prejudice, of children who died too young, and of the way the past continues to shape the present like a ghost that cannot be laid to rest. The water that claims one life in the story mirrors the drowning of joy, innocence, and possibility that time visits upon us all. Written in Storm's crystalline prose, this is a meditation on mortality and memory, on the secrets families keep, and on how the dead remain present in the places we thought we'd forgotten.
