An Account of the Escape of Six Federal Soldiers from Prison at Danville, Va.

This is not history written from a distance. This is what survival actually felt like, recorded by a man who wasn't certain he'd live to publish it. In the winter of 1863-64, six Union soldiers found themselves imprisoned in Danville, Virginia - cold, hungry, and hundreds of miles behind Confederate lines. What followed was a desperate escape under cover of darkness and a harrowing journey north through enemy territory, where every stranger could be a threat and every mile brought them closer to freedom or death. W.H. Newlin writes with the raw clarity of a man who lived through every frozen step and sleepless night. He captures the terror of the breakout, the brutal winter conditions, the strange mercy of sympathetic civilians, and the unbreakable bond between men who knew some of them might not make it home. This is adventure writing at its most elemental: real people, real danger, no safety net. It endures because it reminds us that freedom isn't an abstraction - it's something you walk toward through the snow, knowing you might never stop walking.
