Adventures in Swaziland: The Story of a South African Boer

A young Boer ventures into the last independent kingdom in southern Africa and finds himself seated before a king. Owen Rowe O'Neil, barely out of boyhood, follows his influential uncle Oom Tuys into the court of King Buno and Queen Labotsibeni, bearing tributes and navigating the treacherous politics of a region caught between colonial expansion and ancient kingdoms. This is Swaziland on the eve of the twentieth century - a place where Boer traders, Zulu rivals, and Swazi royalty circle each other with careful courtesy and hidden daggers. O'Neil writes with the breathless urgency of youth discovering that the world is larger and stranger than his frontier farm in Transvaal. His account captures a lost moment: the last years before the colonial map redrew everything, seen through eyes that were both part of the machinery of expansion and genuinely awed by what they witnessed.
