Adrift in the Unknown; Or, Queer Adventures in a Queer Realm

A reformed burglar intends to rob Professor Quinn, only to witness something far more extraordinary than any heist: the eccentric scientist demonstrating his gravity-defying invention to four wealthy financiers, who then vanish into the cosmos along with Quinn's entire castle. What begins as a petty burglary becomes an accidental ticket to an alien realm, as James Peter Munn finds himself swept up in a venture that defies not only the laws of physics but the rigid class structures of early twentieth-century society. The professor's invention, meant to liberate humanity from the tyranny of weight, becomes a vehicle for exploring what happens when the powerful are suddenly unmoored from their privileged position and the common man must navigate the extraordinary. Published in an era when science fiction was still finding its footing, this forgotten novel blends utopian speculation with sharp social commentary. The title's use of "queer" speaks to strangeness rather than identity, yet the narrative's preoccupation with transformation and the inversion of social hierarchies feels remarkably modern. The adventure that follows the abductees through an unknown realm serves as both pulp excitement and quiet meditation on greed, morality, and the nature of progress. For readers who wonder what early science fiction looked like before it learned its tropes, this is a strange, uneven, and oddly prescient artifact.
