Adrift in the Ice-Fields

The frozen Gulf of St. Lawrence swallows ships whole. This is where three English sportsmen venture in search of sea-fowl and glory, guided by Captain Lund, a hardened host who knows these ice-fields like the lines on his own weathered face. But the captain carries old knowledge, superstitions whispered among fishermen who have seen the ice claim too many lives. As winter tightens its grip on St. Pierre Island, the hunting party pushes deeper into the drift ice, each day farther from safety, each night the wind howling louder than the last. What begins as spirited sport becomes a test of survival against an environment that does not distinguish between brave and foolish. Hall renders the maritime provinces in winter with the kind of vivid brutality that made Victorian adventure writers legendary, while his supernatural undercurrents hint that the ice itself may be alive, resentful, watching.
