A Woman Tenderfoot

In 1900, a woman named Grace Gallatin Seton-Thompson did something almost unheard of: she left the comforts of home to follow her husband into the Rocky Mountains, not as a passenger but as a participant in the rough, dangerous work of hunting and wilderness survival. This memoir records her transformation from tenderfoot to something harder, braver, and more self-sufficient than the world expected her to be. She writes with sharp humor about learning to ride, to shoot, to dress practically for outdoor work and the mockery she faced when she didn't. But beneath the wit lies a genuine love of wild places and a quiet, radical assertion: that women's identities aren't fixed by what society permits them to do. The American West was closing when she wrote this, and she knew it. What she captured in these pages isn't just adventure, but a particular moment in history seen through eyes that society said shouldn't be there. For readers who love the American West, early feminist voices, or stories of people discovering who they might become when the familiar world falls away.
