A Voyage Round the World in the Years Mdccxl, I, II, III, IV
1748
In 1740, George Anson led a squadron of eight ships into the Pacific with orders to harass Spanish interests. What followed was a catastrophe. Storms scattered the fleet. Scurvy decimated the crews. By the voyage's end, only one ship remained. Yet Anson, against staggering odds, captured Spanish treasure ships and returned home a hero. Written by the commander himself, this 1748 account offers raw, firsthand testimony of the age of sail at its most brutal and magnificent. Anson spares no detail: the horror of men dying by the dozens, the strategic cunning of his privateering raids, the strange wonder of lands no Englishman had seen. This isn't adventure as triumphal spectacle. It's survival as grinding endurance, punctuated by moments of astonishing fortune. For readers drawn to foundational voyage narratives, maritime history, or the gap between imperial glory and human cost, Anson's account remains indispensable.
