A United States Midshipman in the Philippines

In 1910, Yates Stirling Jr., a real-life naval officer who would become a admiral, delivers a ripping adventure set in the Philippine-American War era. Two young midshipmen, Philip Perry and Sydney Monroe, trade the corridors of Annapolis for the teeming Pasig River aboard the steamer Isla de Negros. Their journey toward their first posting on a gunboat should be routine. It is not. Pirates strike. The waters are not safe. The native populations they encounter are neither simple backdrop nor simple allies. Stirling writes with the knowing authority of someone who lived this life, giving his young heroes a front-row seat to the violence, moral complexity, and strange camaraderie of American naval service in a colony in flames. This is boys-will-be-boys adventure writing with an edge: the political tensions of occupation simmer beneath every shore leave, and the dangers are not confined to pirates. For readers who love naval fiction, historical adventure, or stories of young officers learning that war is not the clean geometry of strategy textbooks.
