A Soldier of the Legion

August 1915, the chalk hills of Champagne. Sergeant Morlae commands a unit of the French Foreign Legion men whose pasts would shock the civilians back home: criminals, debtors, American adventurers, drifters from a dozen nations. They've all fled something. Now they're about to charge into something that might kill them all. This is a soldier's-eye view of the Great War, raw and immediate. Morlae writes with the dry eye of a man who has seen too much, yet he finds something almost tender in the brotherhood of misfits around him. These men mock death, share their rum, and tease each other about the women they've left behind. They are not heroes in any patriotic sense. They are survivors in a strange, chosen family, bound by the simple fact that no one else would have them. The battle scenes carry the weight of early industrial warfare: artillery that never stops, the strange silence before an assault, the chaos of men moving forward into machine gun fire. Yet the heart of the book is quieter: the hours of waiting, the dark humor, the loyalty that grows between men who know they might not see tomorrow. For readers who want war literature that avoids both jingoism and easy cynicism, this is a window into a world that no longer exists.
