A Romance of Toronto (founded on Fact): A Novel

Among the earliest novels set in Toronto, Annie G. Savigny's 1888 work captures a city on the cusp of modernity through the lens of romance and social ambition. Mr. Buckingham, a wealthy bachelor haunted by the notion that love requires wealth, finds himself drawn to a woman in Toronto while grappling with whether he can offer her anything more than material security. Meanwhile, the Dales arrive in the city, their friend Mrs. Gower greeting them with richly layered metaphors that transform Toronto into something almost mythic. The narrative unfolds through conversations about companionship, the impossibility of happiness alone, and the unspoken bargains that underlie Victorian marriage. Savigny writes with sharp observational wit about the dance between fortune and feeling, asking whether affection can exist independent of financial footing. The result is both a love story and a subtle critique of a society where romance and commerce intertwine. For readers curious about early Canadian fiction or the social world of late Victorian Toronto, this novel offers a fascinating time capsule wrapped in genuine emotional stakes.
