A Heart-Song of to-Day (disturbed by Fire from the 'unruly Member'): A Novel
1886
This feverish Victorian novel opens at midnight, in a woman's private chamber, with two men competing for her attention. Mrs. Tompkins is no passive prize: she schemes, flirts, and calculates her way through the treacherous waters of upper-class courtship, though her strategic maneuvering cannot entirely conceal what she truly feels. Captain Trevalyon and Major Delrose circle each other like duelists, each harboring deeper ambitions and jealousies that threaten to boil over into scandal. The title's strange poetry hints at the book's central tension: a "heart-song" of genuine feeling disturbed by "fire from the unruly member" - desire that will not be tamed by propriety. Savigny writes with a verve that exceeds typical Victorian restraint, giving her characters a raw emotional intensity that makes their power plays feel genuinely dangerous. The prose crackles with flirtation, intrusion, and the particular anguish of wanting what one cannot safely take.
