A Rock in the Baltic

A chance encounter at a Maine bank propels Lieutenant Alan Drummond into a most unusual predicament. When he witnesses Dorothy Amhurst abandon a handful of gold coins during a routine transaction, his instinct to return the money to the anxious young woman triggers a spectacular misunderstanding: the bank cashier suspects robbery, and suddenly the British naval officer finds himself entangled with a stranger whose fortunes seem far more complicated than they first appear. What begins as an awkward apology spirals into something far more intriguing, as Drummond discovers Dorothy harbors secrets worthy of a espionage plot, and the icy waters of the Baltic Sea await. Robert Barr, the master of Edwardian adventure, weaves a delightful romance through mistaken identities, class tensions, and the glittering uncertainty of early twentieth-century love. The novel zips between the genteel shores of Maine and the dramatic naval theaters of Northern Europe, asking a timeless question: can a gentleman truly trust a woman who leaves gold unattended? For readers who crave their romance with a side of high seas intrigue and turn-of-the-century charm.
