A Psychiatric Milestone: Bloomingdale Hospital Centenary, 1821-1921

Published in 1921 to mark the hundredth anniversary of Bloomingdale Hospital, this commemorative volume captures a pivotal moment in American psychiatric history. The hospital, founded in 1821 as one of the nation's earliest institutions dedicated to mental illness, had witnessed a profound transformation in how society understood and treated those with mental disorders. The book gathers addresses from leading psychiatrists of the era, historical retrospectives on the hospital's founding, and vivid accounts of the centenary celebrations themselves. What emerges is not merely a local history but a window into the slow, hard-won evolution of humane care: from the bleak custodial asylums of the early nineteenth century to the more progressive, psychologically-informed approaches taking shape by the 1920s. For historians of medicine, scholars of institutional history, or anyone curious about how modern psychiatry emerged from its troubled past, this volume offers primary source material from the generation that lived through that transformation. It stands as a artifact of professional pride and a testament to how much remained still to be accomplished.
