A Prisoner of the Khaleefa: Twelve Years Captivity at Omdurman

In 1887, a German merchant named Karl Neufeld made a fatal miscalculation: he led a trading expedition into the Sudan, a region convulsed by religious war. He was captured by the Mahdist forces, those fanatical dervishes who had already annihilated General Gordon's army at Khartoum, and he would not see freedom again for twelve grueling years. Written in 1899, the very year of his release, this memoir offers something vanishingly rare: an immediate, firsthand account from inside the Mahdist state at its height, documenting not merely captivity but an entire world that has since vanished from history. Neufeld describes the labyrinth of rival dervish factions, the brutal conditions of imprisonment, the ever-present specter of torture, and his own slow, agonizing negotiation for survival across more than a decade. He witnessed the death of Gordon, the rise and consolidation of the Khalifa's power, and finally the British reconquest led by Kitchener that ended his captivity. This is not polished literature but something more valuable: raw testimony from a man who had no time to fictionalize, no distance to soften his memories. For readers drawn to captivity narratives, colonial history, or the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit, this book is an unfiltered portal into one of the nineteenth century's most dramatic and blood-soaked corners.
