A Parody on Iolanthe

In this gleefully absurd 1883 theatrical parody, Gilbert and Sullivan's fairy operetta COLLIDES with the mundane world of American railroading. Iolanthe, banished to the mortal realm for marrying a mortal, has lived beneath the Chicago & Alton Railway for a century; her son Strephon now works there as a very unsuccessful shepherd (the trains keep interrupting). The trouble: Strephon loves Phyllis, the Station Master's daughter, but the Fairy Queen forbids love between fairies and mortals. Chaos ensues as supernatural bureaucracy meets 19th-century railway management, with fairies arguing points of fairy law against corporate contracts, and the Lord Chancellor struggling to adjudicate matters of the heart while the trains run on schedule. It's a period piece curiosity, certainly of its time, but the sharp satire of Victorian class pretension and institutional absurdity gives it legs. The humor lands when fairy logic collides with the rigid machinery of railway governance, creating an unlikely comedy of manners that pokes fun at both the original operetta and the pompous seriousness of corporate enterprise.
