A Matter of Magnitude

Admiral Heselton commands the Senator Joseph L. Holloway, a spaceship over a mile long, bristling with enough weaponry to terrify any enemy. He calls her Big Joe, and every time he walks her corridors, he feels the awe of a man who has achieved something unprecedented in human history. Then comes the transmission from the void: an alien vessel, invisible to radar and optical sensors, has spotted them. The aliens are annoyed. They find Big Joe threatening. And then comes the revelation that cuts to the heart of human vanity - the alien ship is one and a half inches long. What humanity built as the ultimate expression of cosmic dominance is, to a more advanced civilization, nothing more than an oversized gunboat floating in someone's living room. Sevcik's 1950s satire cuts both ways: a warning about the arrogance of technological superiority and a razor-sharp joke about perspective. It's the kind of story that makes you reconsider every assumption about size, power, and what it means to be observed.
