A Hoodoo Machine; Or, The Motor Boys' Runabout No. 1313.brave and Bold Weekly No. 363

It's 1913, and the open road means something different when your wheels are held together by optimism and prayer. Matt King, Joe McGlory, and Billy Wells have inherited a lemon: a temperamental runabout bearing the ominous number 1313, already cursed by local superstition and prone to throwing them into ditches at the worst possible moments. When they stop to help a stranded driver, the boys expects gratitude. Instead, they find themselves knee-deep in a shady mining scheme involving a too-smooth colonel and a mining engineer whose credentials smell fishier than a dry creekbed. The hoodoo car keeps breaking down at precisely the wrong moments, yet somehow keeps carrying them closer to the truth. This is early automobile adventure at its finest: a world where a flat tire can derail your evening and a friendly stranger might be plotting your downfall. Dime-novel fun that captures an era when cars were magical, terrifying, and always, always breaking down.
