A Balloon Ascension at Midnight

Paris sleeps below as you rise into the dark sky, tethered only to a wicker basket and a French aeronaut named Etienne Giraud. This is A Balloon Ascension at Midnight, George Eli Hall's luminous account of early aerial adventure, where the world shrinks to a carpet of gaslit streets and the only sounds are wind and the creak of the Rolla. The voyage begins in wonder: dawn light breaking over farms and forests, the distant spire of a cathedral town, clouds that envelop the basket like something tangible and alive. But ballooning in 1900 was no gentle pastime. Hall renders the craft's operation with exacting precision, the delicate negotiation of guide-rope against treetops, the release of ballast to catch a shifting wind, the constant calculation between ascent and catastrophe. As the night wears on, conditions deteriorate. What was once tranquil becomes tense: a storm closes in, winds shift unpredictably, and the final descent ends in a violent crash landing. Yet even in peril, there is dark humor and hard-won wonder, the absurd bravery of early aeronauts who trusted their lives to silk and hot air. This is for readers who crave the romance of old exploration narratives, who want to feel the altitude in their lungs and remember that the sky was once a wild place humans had only begun to tame.
