Kirsopp Lake was an influential English New Testament scholar and Church historian, recognized for his extensive contributions to the study of early Christianity and Greek palaeography. As the Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Harvard Divinity School, he engaged in a wide range of scholarly pursuits, including textual criticism of the New Testament and the historical figure of Jesus. His notable works include the monumental five-volume series, The Beginnings of Christianity, which he conceived and edited alongside F. J. Foakes-Jackson. This comprehensive study provided an edition, translation, and commentary on the Acts of the Apostles, significantly impacting the field of New Testament studies. In addition to his work on early Christian texts, Lake edited and translated a two-volume anthology of ancient Christian literature and the first five books of Eusebius' Church History for the Loeb Classical Library. His ten-volume series of Dated Greek Manuscripts to the year 1200, co-edited with his second wife, Silva New, remains a vital resource for scholars of Greek manuscripts. Lake's scholarly legacy is marked by his rigorous approach to textual analysis and his ability to bridge the gap between historical inquiry and theological exploration, solidifying his place as a key figure in the study of early Christianity and ecclesiastical history.
