John L. Ridgway

John L. Ridgway was an influential American scientific illustrator known for his meticulous work in ornithology and paleontology. Born in Mount Carmel, Illinois, he was the brother of renowned ornithologist Robert Ridgway. His early career began in the 1880s when he worked as a copyist and draftsman for the United States National Museum, a role that set the foundation for his lifelong dedication to scientific illustration. Over the years, he served as a draftsman for the United States Geological Survey from 1884 to 1918 and later became its chief illustrator until 1920. His expertise was also sought by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, showcasing his significant contributions to the field of scientific research and illustration. In 1920, Ridgway relocated to California, where he continued his work with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Institute of Technology until his passing in 1947. His notable publications include "Scientific Illustration" and "The Preparation of Illustrations for Reports of the United States Geological Survey," which reflect his commitment to enhancing the visual representation of scientific findings.
