Wilhelm II was the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, ruling from 1888 until his abdication in 1918. Born into the Hohenzollern dynasty as the son of Prince Frederick William and Victoria, Princess Royal, he was closely linked to the British royal family as the eldest grandchild of Queen Victoria. His reign began under tumultuous circumstances following the brief rule of his father, Frederick III, who died just 99 days after ascending the throne. Wilhelm II quickly dismissed the influential Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1890, taking direct control of Germany's policies and embarking on a 'New Course' aimed at establishing Germany as a dominant world power. Under Wilhelm's leadership, Germany expanded its colonial empire and became a major industrial power in Europe. However, his often reckless diplomacy, marked by aggressive rhetoric and a significant naval buildup, alienated other great powers and contributed to rising tensions in Europe. His policies, including challenges to British interests and support for Austria-Hungary, ultimately played a role in the outbreak of World War I. Following Germany's defeat in 1918, Wilhelm II abdicated, marking the end of the German Empire and the Hohenzollern dynasty's 300-year rule. His legacy is one of ambition and miscalculation, as his reign significantly shaped the course of early 20th-century European history.
