Novels

Piso, a young Roman merchant, abandons his homeland for the legendary city of Palmyra, where he finds himself entangled in the court of Queen Zenobia, one of history's most audacious rulers. William Ware, an American Unitarian minister writing in the Romantic tradition, constructs Piso's journey as an awakening: from the teeming streets of Rome to the golden desolation of the Syrian desert, through encounters with a sharp-tongued Jewish merchant named Isaac and a contemplative Christian philosopher named Probus. Around Piso, the great game of empire plays out. Zenobia has carved an empire from Rome's crisis of the third century, ruling with intelligence and ferocity. But the emperor Aurelian is marching east with his legions, and Palmyra's days are numbered. Ware's prose carries the Romantic era's appetite for exoticism and fallen grandeur, temples gleaming against night skies, political murders at banquet tables, philosophical debates under colonnades. This was among the first American historical novels, a bold experiment that asked whether the young republic could claim antiquity's drama as its own. For readers drawn to forgotten empires, formidable women, and the birth of American literary ambition.
