<em>Woe from Wit</em> (Горе от ума) is a comedy in verse by Aleksandr Sergeyevich Griboyedov, written in 1823. Set in post-Napoleonic Moscow, the play satirizes the societal norms and pretensions of the time. Although it faced censorship and was not officially published until 1833, it circulated widely in manuscript form and became a significant part of Russian literature, influencing language and culture with its memorable phrases. The play remains a classic in Russian-speaking countries and was a staple in Soviet education.
