White Lotus, the Legend of the Cat's Eye

The great god Indra, ruler of thunder and rain, falls hopelessly in love with a mortal princess whose aristocratic lineage stretches across the Indian peninsula. Unable to approach her as an invisible deity, he makes an extraordinary choice: he descends to earth as White Lotus, an exquisite white Angora cat with gray-green eyes and a coat like cotton fluff. In this humble form, he wins a place in her household, content to exist in her shadow. But when jealous gods strike the princess with grave illness, White Lotus faces an impossible choice. He/weeps for seven days and seven nights, surrendering his own life to retrieve hers. The princess, shattered by grief, preserves his luminous eyes in a bracelet as a memorial to devotion that transcended form. This early 20th century mythological romance explores love's capacity to bridge the divine and mortal divide, and asks whether sacrifice truly ends when the body perishes.
