Welsh Rarebit Tales

Who was Harle Oren Cummins? The question may never be answered. What remains are fifteen stories published in magazines between 1900 and 1910, then collected into Welsh Rarebit Tales and forgotten for decades. The author vanished completely after this single volume, leaving behind conflicting birthdates, disputed hometowns, and an unsolved mystery of gender. But the stories outlive the speculation. They range from scientific experimentation gone horrifyingly wrong to supernatural encounters that blur the boundary between dream and waking. Some read like proto-science fiction, others like Gothic ghost tales told by someone who found conventional scares too easy. The tone veers from darkly comic to genuinely unsettling, often within a single page. These are not polished period pieces; they are strange, alive, occasionally rough around the edges. That roughness is part of their charm. They feel like windows into a peculiar literary mind, one that operated just outside the mainstream. For readers who love literary mysteries, early weird fiction, or simply stories that refuse to be categorized, this is a genuine artifact of forgotten ambition.
