A writer pens a new play for the annual summer theater festival at Baron von Schottenegg's castle. But when the lead actor, von Umprecht, reveals a chilling secret, the line between art and fatal destiny begins to blur. Ten years earlier, von Umprecht experienced a prophetic vision: he saw himself dead on a stretcher, surrounded by a grieving red-haired woman and two children. Now, standing before a stage production that mirrors his vision with uncanny precision, he must decide whether to perform and risk fulfilling the prophecy, or refuse and admit that some fates cannot be escaped. Schnitzler weaves a haunting meditation on prediction and self-fulfilling destiny, exploring the terrifying possibility that life itself might simply be a script already written.
